Manuscript Evaluation vs. Developmental Editing: Which One Do You Need? Both manuscript evaluations and developmental editing focus on the big-picture elements of your story—pacing, structure, character development, and overall storytelling impact. However, they offer different levels of depth and support. Manuscript Evaluation – A broad, high-level assessment of your novel. I’ll read through your manuscript and provide a detailed editorial letter (no in-line edits) that highlights strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps. This is great for writers who want a roadmap for revision without diving into extensive edits. Developmental Editing – A deep dive into your story’s foundation with more hands-on feedback. In addition to an editorial letter, I provide in-line comments throughout your manuscript to pinpoint specific areas that need revision. This is best for writers looking for guided, detailed feedback on every aspect of their story before moving on to line editing or copyediting. Not sure which one is right for you? Let’s chat! I can help you determine the best approach for your story’s stage and needs.
-
How long does a developmental edit take?Timelines vary depending on the manuscript’s length and complexity, but most projects take 4–6 weeks. I’ll provide a more specific timeframe once we discuss your project.
